Stouts are very similar to porter beers, both having similar malty bittersweet flavors. When brewers started adding new ingredients to their porters to increase alcohol content, the stouts were born. Stouts are more full-bodied than porters and use unmalted roasted barley to give them a coffee-like flavor.
